representation in climbing
Fall 2022 - Spring 2023
In 2021, I moved back to my home state of Minnesota eager to find community and connection after spending over a year in small-town Montana to stake out the beginning of the pandemic. Around that same time, I was introduced to rock climbing and found myself surrounded by a thriving and rapidly growing community of both queer athletes and climbers of color. My prior understanding of rock climbing as a white, cisgender, and heteronormative-centric sport for men was totally refuted, and today, I'm using my knowledge in photography and ropes to share that representation in the outdoors and the sport.
These photos were taken around the Midwest, in Northern Vietnam, and Central Laos. The gym photos are from a BIPOC routesetting clinic I hosted at the Minnesota Climbing Cooperative in March 2023, and many outdoor photos I took in Minnesota are from outings led by and for BIPOC in the Twin Cities.
